Background:

This is a motorcycle ride between the endpoints of Interstate 40 (Barstow, California, and Wilmington, North Carolina) exclusively via Interstate 40 (approximately 2,552 miles), in less than 40 hours.

Read the rules for the iconic SaddleSore 1000 on the Ironbutt Association site.  The rules for this ride are similar and you will get valuable background information.

Documentation:  See here.

Fee:  $55

Definitions:

DBR - Dated Business Receipt

A DBR is a machine generated receipt that includes date, time, city, and state.  It is your responsibility to verify a receipt's completeness and correctness.  A receipt with incorrect or missing information is worthless.

Rules:

40-40 Map

You must have previously completed an IBA Bun Burner GOLD or approved equivalent.

You must ride the entirety of I-40 between its endpoints in Barstow, California, and Wilmington, North Carolina, and you may ride in either direction.
I-40's eastern endpoint is east of NC exit 420; east of that point, the road is US-117 (College Rd).
I-40's western endpoint is west of CA exit 2 at the junction with I-15.

You must complete the ride in less than 40 hours.

You must ride all of your miles on I-40, except for slight deviations for fueling and breaks (within a mile of I-40), and except for highway detours. If you leave I-40 for reasons of safety, emergency, or repairs, you must resume your ride from the point of leaving I-40, and you must explain any such departures.

You must obtain a DBR in each of the two endpoint cities. Your official ride duration is determined from these starting and finishing DBRs.

You must obtain a DBR at least every 350 miles.

SpotWalla use is mandatory:

You must use a tracking device to record your entire actual ride route and must upload the track points to Spotwalla. You must provide the SpotWalla link for the ride's track points when applying for your ride certificate.

On your tracking device, before starting the ride, you must set the update frequency to 5 minutes if available, or to the smallest value otherwise.

In your SpotWalla trip definition, you must set the following options before submitting your ride application:
Security Options:
- Allow public to download trip data?  YES
- Hide the time for each location?  NO
- Optional password: We prefer no password; if one is used, you must provide it to us.
- What types of messages do you want to show on this trip?  Check all (OK, Help, Tracking, Custom)
Map Options:
- What type of icon should be used to display each location?  DOT for Tracking; ICON for others
- Draw a line from one location to the next?  YES

Nesting:

You may qualify for additional IBA certification on this ride (known as nesting), opportunities are limited.  For example, a Bun Burner GOLD is eligible, since the 40-40 Insanity may be completed without a BBG. But a SaddleSore 1000 is not eligible, since one is necessary to complete the 40-40.

Also, you may nest a 40-40 within a 50CC Quest (Coast to Coast in 50 hours).  Barstow is about 130 road miles from the west coastal cities of Santa Monica or Long Beach, so you could ride to a west coast city right before or after a 40-40 to nest it within a 50CC ride.  Refer to the full description of nesting.

Merchandise:

This is a certificate-only ride. No additional merchandise is available.
