Background:

This is a motorcycle ride between the endpoints of selected US Interstate Highways. Love them or hate them, in the United States we all ride on Interstates. The Interstate End to End (I-E2E) series is created to recognize riding exclusively on and for the entire distance of a US Interstate highway.

The IBA has designated all 13 Interstate highways with lengths greater than 1,000 miles for this series; 7 east-west and 6 north-south.  The levels of effort recognized are  I-E2E,  I-E2E GOLD,  consecutive (back to back) I-E2E2E and I-E2E2E GOLD. An allotment of hours applies for each Interstate ride in the series (Basic and GOLD) to qualify for certification.

Read the rules for the SaddleSore 1000 and Bun Burner 1500 on the Iron Butt Association site. The rules for the Interstate End to End series are similar and you will get valuable background information.

Rules:  It is your responsibility to prove the ride. The IBA “gold standard” of verification is the DBR at the start, along the route as necessary, and at the finish location. Satellite tracking displayed on a SpotWalla trip map is required for the Interstate End to End series. It is your responsibility to ensure the satellite tracking functions well enough to demonstrate you remained on the primary Interstate route. Using the DBR or satellite tracking device OK or Custom marker at key locations may be necessary. When in doubt, mark it; when really in doubt, get a DBR.

  • You may ride each of these rides in either direction.
  • You must ride each of these rides in less than the allotted number of hours.
  • For most of these rides, you must ride the entirety of the selected Interstate from and to its opposite endpoint coordinates.  You must obtain a DBR in each of the two endpoint cities, ideally before the geographical beginning and beyond the ending of the Interstate, traveling through the coordinates shown above. EXCEPTION: Some Interstate endpoints are at the USA border.  It is not necessary to cross into Canada or Mexico as endpoints.  You may use an available turn-around opportunity closest to the border, within a mile of the endpoint as a substitute.)
  • Your official ride duration is determined from these starting and finishing DBRs.
  • You must obtain a DBR at least every 350 miles.
  • I-E2E GOLD requires IBA Bun Burner GOLD or approved equivalent as a prerequisite.
  • SpotWalla (satellite tracking) trip data is mandatory for the I-E2E series. See: SpotWalla Protocols.
  • It is your responsibility to determine the routing of the primary Interstate. Do not rely on your GPS to route you along the primary Interstate. Example; I-95 merges into I-495 around the south and east of Washington DC.  Google Maps is a good source to establish the route of the primary Interstate.  Caution:  google maps will often route you off the primary Interstate to avoid traffic .  DO NOT TAKE THESE OFF-INTERSTATE ROUTES.
  • You must ride all your miles on the primary Interstate. EXCEPTIONS:  Official highway closures (you must document this);  deviations for emergency,  repairs, or taking a wrong turn (you must resume your ride at the point of interstate departure); or fueling or rest breaks within one mile of the Interstate.
  • It is permissible to use Express/HOV/Toll lane, provided such lanes are parallel with, adjacent to, and signed the same as the primary Interstate.
  • You may apply for certification of a I-E2E and I-E2E2E as many times as you successfully complete each event. (Example:  I-10 E2E 10 Times (5, I-E2E2E) “Interstate 10, End to End, 10 Times
  • The Interstate End to End series may be combined with other IBA certificate rides (nesting) as appropriate, opportunities are limited. Refer to the full description of nesting.
