Background:
In
the ancient Roman calendar, the Ides of a month occurred near
mid-month, and every month included an Ides. The specific date of the
Ides varies among months, as follows:
- The
15th of the month for March, May, July, and October
- The
13th of the month for each of the other eight months of the calendar
year
Read the rules for
the iconic SaddleSore 1000 on the Ironbutt
Association site. The rules for this ride are similar and you
will get valuable background information.
Documentation: Send
copies of your certificates for the qualifying Ides rides along with
your ride application. If you have not yet received a certificate for
one of your claimed rides, please note that in the application.
Fee: See fee page
Rules:
A qualifying Ides ride is ANY
SaddleSore 1000 which occurs during the Ides of a calendar month.
You must be riding at some point during the Ides of a month. You may
start the day
before the Ides and finish on the Ides, or start on the Ides and finish
the next day, or ride entirely on the day of the Ides.
12 Ides 1000
- You must complete a qualifying Ides ride in each of the 12 calendar
months. Your rides need not occur in consecutive months; your rides may
span multiple years and need not occur in calendar month order.
12 Ides 1000 Gold -
You must complete a qualifying Ides ride in each of 12 consecutive
calendar months. Your rides may occur in a single calendar year, or
may span
two consecutive years, but must occur in a continuous 12-month period.
12 Ides 1000 Insanity
In
Shakespeare's play Julius
Caesar,
the emperor was warned to "Beware the Ides ..."
In
addition to the rules
for the 12
Ides 1000 Gold, the 12
Ides 1000 Insanity award has these
requirements:
- Your qualifying Ides rides must start in cities whose
initial letters spell out "BEWARE THE IDES", in order; example: Barstow
(Nov/2017), El Paso
(Dec/2017), Waco (Jan/2018),
Ames
(Feb/2018), etc.
- Your qualifying Ides rides must finish in cities whose
initial letters spell out "BEWARE THE IDES", in order (same example as for starting cities)
- You may reuse cities for starting, or for finishing, or for
both starting and finishing
- Since the quotation contains 13 letters, you must complete a 13th qualifying Ides ride during the
Ides of any one of
the 12 consecutive
calendar months. This requires a pair of rides, one finishing on the Ides of a
month, and the second starting on the Ides of the same month (adequate rest is recommended between the two rides). You may
choose any month for this pair of Ides rides, within the required
continuous 12-month period.
Merchandise: These are certificate-only awards. There is no additional merchandise for
these awards.
