Background / Rules
This is a New Zealand based ride.
This ride has a special certificate with a custom design. It has been designed to encourage social meet ups and joint planning of rides with other riders, perhaps in other parts of the country.
Based on a standard SaddleSore 1600K ride, all normal SS1600K rules apply, but with the following extra requirements:
- This ride must be done in partnership with another, established IBA rider (their membership number must be known).
- Only one of you must be riding, and complete a SS1600K, certified ride, the other can intercept or meet the rider at an appropriate point along their route to be passed-the-buck..
- The two IBA riders (a giver and a receiver) will meet at a place and time which is part way through the certified ride, no closer than 200km to the start or end of that rider's ride.
- If one rider is not participating in a certified ride, then no distance requirements apply to the secondary rider.
- If a Pass-the-Buck certificate cannot be awarded, then a standard SS1600K may still be available.
- One or more bucks can be passed during an exchange, but a maximum of one buck can be given, and a maximum of one can be received by any individual rider (a max of one in each direction).
There are three ways this ride can be done:
- The buck can start with the rider who is performing the certified ride.
- The buck can be passed to the rider who is performing the certified ride.
- Both riders can be riding certified rides.
The requirements for who does what vary depending on who starts off with the buck:
Rules for when the buck is starting with the rider who is performing a certified ride:
- On the back of the Buck, the giver should write their IBA number and the start-date of the ride (to form a ride-log on the back of the buck). Take a photo of both the front and the back of the Buck, and remember to submit these with your ride application.
- The giver must incorporate both their start receipt AND the printed FIVE Bucks into their start ODO photo.
- When the two riders meet up, a selfie of both riders and the banknote must be taken. Share this either through Spotwalla or by email with your verifier.
Rules for when the buck is being handed to a rider during their certified ride (the giver must already be in possession of an existing buck), the rider who is performing their certified ride is the receiver in this case.
- The giver must record their own number, and the date of the exchange on the back of the buck, this is the only log entry which should be added to the buck for this date.
- When the two riders meet up, a selfie of both riders and the banknote must be taken. Share this either through Spotwalla or by email with your verifier.
- The receiver must incorporate both their end receipt AND the printed FIVE Bucks into their end ODO photo.
Short version:
- If you're holding a buck when you start, include it in your start ODO photo.
- If you're holding a buck when you end, include it in your end ODO photo.
- Only the giver's IBA number should be added to the dated ride log on the back.
Supplimentary Rules for when a rider wants to introduce a new Buck into circulation:
- For a brand new buck, it must be *given by the rider during their own certified ride*. They must print a copy of the 'Iron Butt Association's FIVE Bucks' (Not a real bank note!) Available here. They must write their IBA member number on the FRONT of the note, in the white area to the left hand side using PEN, it must be large and clear enough for it to be readable when photographed.
- All of the other requirements remain in place.
Further reuse of the Buck:
- The receiver can reuse the Buck on one of their future rides, either with the same riding partner or someone else.
- If they reuse the Buck, they should leave the *original rider number on the front of the buck*, and add their own Member number and the date of the exchange to the back of the Buck. - This will act as a log of who's hands the buck has been through.
- We recommend keeping the Buck safe and dry in it's own sandwich bag (or similar).
- If we get a Buck note which is used for 5 or more rides then we'll make an effort to feature this, either with a special FaceBook post, or with an Award certificate for those involved.
Read the rules for the iconic SaddleSore 1000 on the Ironbutt Association site. The rules for this ride are similar and you will get valuable background information.
